The Wise Man from the West

A Lecture by Antoni Üçerler
Oriental Institute, Oxford University

This public lecture was delivered by Professor Antoni Üçerler at Gonzaga College, a Jesuit high-school in Dublin, on 8 May 2010 and made available online by the Irish Province of the Society of Jesus, at: http://vimeo.com/12015123. (Readers who have difficulty viewing the video through Vimeo can click here to access the Tudou version.) For further details on Antoni Üçerler, click here.

As the online introduction to the lecture observes (with minor editorial alteration):

This year (2010) is the four hundredth anniversary of the death of the great Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci. In this screencast, Antoni Üçerler SJ, who teaches Japanese history at Oxford University, reprises his lecture for the Ricci conference organised by the Irish Jesuit Province in Gonzaga College on 8 May 2010. Fr Üçerler explains the great significance of Ricci, particularly on account of the depth of his 'inculturation', hundreds of years before that word had gained general currency.
